Jenkins Street House: A balance of opposites

Over the last few months, we have come across some absolutely exquisite restoration/extension projects across Melbourne. And now, we add Jenkins Street House to the list!

Designed by the innovative team at C. Kairouz Architects, Jenkins Street House sees an art deco home reinvigorated. Following its extensive transformation, Jenkins Street House now sees modern design contrasted perfectly with restored period grandeur. A task that is not easy to accomplish by any means.

Situated in rapidly gentrifying Northcote, the home sits within a broader context of transformation. Tasked with bringing this charming but aged 1930s home back to life, the architects have created a truly unique family abode replete with space, light and character.

In the original part of the home, C. Kairouz Architects have painstakingly restored the original Tasmanian oak timber flooring and decorative ceiling rosettes. This careful restoration pays the ultimate respect to the mid-century bones of this home.

From the quiet elegance of the original structure, the home expands out into a grand extension that differs markedly in style. The home’s cleverly designed floorplan acts to entice you to this new space. This is mainly thanks to the breathtaking steel and glass ‘bridge’ that joins the old and new halves of the property. A celebration of the split personality of Jenkins Street House, this exquisite walkway sits sunlit and floating above the property’s pool. A feature with serious impact.

Upon traversing the walkway, you arrive upon the home’s state-of-the-art open plan living and entertaining space. And at the heart of it all, Domofocus hangs in pride of place. Its sleek black finish ties into the industrial style of the kitchen, whilst adding warmth and liveliness to the space. This truly is the perfect accessory for a home located in the trendy and industrial enclave of Northcote.

Accentuating the value in contradiction, Jenkins Street House is a sight to behold. Change has never looked so good.

Domofocus

The eloquence of fire is no more evident than with Domofocus, the younger sibling of the iconic Gyrofocus. Slightly smaller but with a larger smile than its big brother, this suspended fireplace brings both warmth and elegance to traditional or contemporary interiors.
