Contained by Design: the perfect integration of the Stûv 30 Compact in a unique sustainable dwelling

Nestled harmoniously in the remnant woodlands of Aireys Inlet, this prefab house is a testament to the power of thoughtful, minimalist design. Created by Green Magazine’s own editor, Tamsin O’Neill, and publisher Tom Bodycomb, the residence combines an innovative spatial approach with raw materiality to create a home that feels both intimate and expansive.

A Home Rooted in Simplicity

From the outset, the design brief called for a dwelling that would blend seamlessly into its surroundings while maximising liveable space within a small footprint. The architects answered with a home that prioritises natural light, flexibility, and a strong connection to the natural coastal environment.

Care and custodianship shape every element of this remarkable home. The metal shell is so well-sealed and insulated that it’s serenely quiet, even during storms, and functions like a passive house. A heat recovery ventilation system ensures a constant exchange of air while also enabling the entire home to be heated by a single Stûv 30 Compact fireplace. Wrapped with custom steel shelving, the compact and highly efficient wood fireplace integrates seamlessly into the main living space. This ingenious design reflects the home’s ethos of making the most of every element.

The Stûv 30 Compact: A Fireplace That Fits

Known for its sleek cylindrical silhouette, the Stûv 30 Compact offers three operating modes — open, slow-combustion and overnight fire — making it as versatile as it is elegant. Its minimalist design echoes the architectural style of the home, enhancing the room’s warm and inviting feel.

Moreover, its rotating body allows the fire to be oriented in multiple directions, adapting to the dynamic needs of this flexible home.

A Shared Philosophy of Craftsmanship

What makes the Stûv 30 Compact an ideal match for this project is its emphasis on craftsmanship and sustainability. Much like the home’s bespoke joinery, the Stûv 30 Compact embodies a commitment to detail and quality. Manufactured in Belgium with a focus on energy efficiency, this fireplace aligns with the environmentally conscious values that underpin the project.

Beyond its functional advantages, the Stûv 30 Compact enhances the sensory experience of the home. The sight and sound of crackling flames provide a comforting counterpoint to the home’s industrial edges, while the fireplace’s clean lines and matte finish amplify the space’s modern sophistication.

The Perfect Balance

With Contained house, Tamsin and Tom have created a home that feels as effortless as it is intentional. By incorporating the Stûv 30 Compact, they have added a layer of warmth and versatility that elevates the entire design. The result is a residence that is not only beautiful but also profoundly liveable—a perfect example of how good design and exceptional craftsmanship can transform a house into a sanctuary.
