Grey House, designed by Adam Kane Architects, is one such project—a serene and minimalist retreat nestled in the lush valleys of Daylesford. This home exemplifies a refined architectural language where simplicity harmonises with nature, and we were fortunate to collaborate on a key element of its design: the fireplaces.
Grey House was conceived as a private sanctuary for Adam Kane and his family—a place where the architecture dissolves into its natural surroundings, offering seclusion and restorative calm. With its soft, muted palette and focus on materiality, the house balances light and shadow, strength and softness. Rather than conforming to an open-plan layout, the home is composed of intimate, purpose-driven spaces that enhance the feeling of retreat.
For Adam, this project embodies his personal architectural ethos—an approach that is both understated and impactful. In every corner of Grey House, you’ll find spaces that convey a sense of balance, with carefully curated details that bring sophistication through restraint.
A Fusion of Form and Function
Our collaboration centred on two key fireplace installations that embody the spirit of Grey House. Outside, the terrace is anchored by a custom outdoor fireplace, designed and fabricated by Oblica to reflect the home’s minimalist aesthetic. Made from marine-grade stainless steel and finished in matte black, the fireplace is more than a functional feature—it’s a striking, sculptural element in the outdoor space. The ribbed combustion chamber and guillotine spark screen add both form and function, aligning perfectly with the home’s minimalist design ethos. This fireplace invites Adam’s family and guests to gather outdoors, offering warmth and connection against the backdrop of Daylesford’s verdant landscape.
Inside, the living room features the iconic Ergofocus fireplace by Focus Fireplaces. Suspended elegantly from the ceiling, its sleek, spherical form becomes an immediate focal point of the space. As with everything in Grey House, the Ergofocus fireplace isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about creating an experience. Its presence amplifies the sense of calm and comfort, providing a place to unwind and reflect amidst the surrounding beauty.

What made Grey House so special for us was the clear vision that Adam brought to the project. Every detail, no matter how small, was carefully considered to ensure it aligned with the home’s broader design language. From the materials chosen to the positioning of the fireplaces, there was a shared understanding that the functional elements of the home should enhance its serene, minimalist atmosphere.
